FG inaugurates 91 housing units in Enugu state

Vanguard reports that the Federal Government on Tuesday inaugurated 91 units of three bedroom bungalow in Vyvian Estate, Ibagwa Nike, in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state. The Minister of State for Works, Power and Housing, Alhaji Mustapha Shehuri, said that the feat was part of efforts to reduce housing deficit in the country. Shehuri said that plans were in place to build several housing units in every state of the federation for public workers over the next three years under public-private partnership.

He said that the ministry had continued to strive to ensure that the challenge of housing deficit in Nigeria estimated at 17 million units was adequately resolved. “It has become a matter of priority for this administration to provide affordable housing for Nigeria’s teeming populace.

“The completion of this estate and its peers across the country is an illustration of the tangible achievements of this administration in the area of provision of affordable housing,” he said. Shehuri appealed to workers in public and private sectors as well as those on self-employment to contribute to the National Housing Fund (NHF) to enable them own their homes. Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi commended the Federal Government for the various initiatives it had put in place to fund housing projects in the state.

Ugwuanyi said that such initiative were necessary complements of his administration’s efforts to provide affordable housing and to ensure that civil servants own their own homes “Of particular note is the recent approval by the Ministry of Works, Power and Housing for national housing loan funds of N5 million and below to attract 100 per cent funding to be paid over a period of five years,” he said. In his remarks, the developer, Mr Leonard Ugwu, said that 105 housing units were in the estate, adding that 91 had been made available to NHF enrollees. Ugwu said that 42 of the 91 units were allotted to officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the zone.

In a goodwill message, the Zonal Commanding Officer of the FRSC, Mr Samuel Obayemi, said that the housing estate was the brainchild of the corps. Obayemi said that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, was making efforts to ensure that all officers across the country had affordable houses before the end of 2020. “This is just one of the housing estates the FRSC is involved and our corps marshal have made a commitment to ensure that all officers had houses before leaving office,” he said.

Obayemi said that the move was aimed at improving the welfare of staff of the corps for efficient service delivery.”
