Lawyer seeks Ambode’s intervention over Coker estate residents’ travail

Vanguard reports that a legal practitioner, Mr. Destiny Takon has petitioned Governor Akinwunmi Ambode over the travails of Coker estate residents in Oworonshoki, Lagos.

By a deed of conveyance dated June 6, 1970, the late Chief Coker was said to have taken possession of over 80 acres of land at Oworonshoki and Ifako-Gbagada, Lagos, which was registered in his name.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, However, in a letter dated March 10, 2017, the lawyer, who is counsel to the residents, said his clients’ possession of the large expanse of land which was registered as 95 at page 95 in volume 1319 at the Lagos State Lands Registry is now being threatened by the activities of the Oba of Oworonshoki Kingdom.

According to the lawyer, the monarch, in his presence and about 30 other residents of the estate decreed at a meeting in his palace that all residents must pay the sum of N2 million to him for each occupied plot of land or for any plot of land sold by the resident. “Our clients are astonished at the sudden decision of the Oba with whom they have lived peacefully for two decades, especially in the light of his rude awakening, that he owns our clients’ land which has been registered for close to 50 years.

“This is moreso, because the land in question was not even acquired from his family who never owned the land in question and who had never challenged our clients title to the land for almost 50 years.’’
