Delta community demands N855 million from NPDC

New Telegraph reports that Oghior community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, demanded a compensation of N855 million from the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) for allegedly failing to contain an oil spillage that occurred in September from militants or its operations in the community.

According to New Telegraph, the President-General of the community, Hon. Wisdom Ghagara, while warning NPDC of the consequences of failing to fulfill their demands, also lamented that NPDC’s operation has not been beneficial to Oghior people over the years, noting that the company has brought so many untold hardship to the community.

He added that the community had written a letter to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, alleging that the fire outbreak in the community was caused by NPDC negligence, saying the locals noticed the leakage on September 19, alerted the management of the company, which acted reluctantly until the last Sunday’s fire incident.

While insisting on the withdrawal of NPDC from the area if it refused to pay the said compensation of N855 million, the community people said the fire explosion was not caused by militants. They further called for relief materials to cushion the excruciating effects of the spill and subsequent fire incidences, New Telegraph reports.
