The Nigerian cabinet has approved over N34 billion naira for the execution of various road projects across the country.
Minister of Works, Power, and Housing, Babatunde Fashola disclosed this to Journalists on Wednesday soon after this week’s cabinet meeting, Chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Minister, who presented four memos at the weekly cabinet meeting said, “The memos presented for consideration, which were approved by the Federal Executive Council, were first for Ikom bridge and road projects in Calabar, Cross River State, to create access to the port for trucks carrying containers because the current bridge there restricts their movement and this will facilitate further activities in the Calabar port. The cost is N8.9 billion and the project time is 24 months.”
“The second project is for the Nguru-Gashua-Balemari road in Yobe State, for N11.778 billion, 37 kilometers and delivery time is 24 months. The third road project is the Ilorin-Ibeti-Kishi road in Kwara State, section I, 50 kilometers, with a completion period of 24 months and the cost is N8.6 billion.”
“The fourth project approved today is the re-award of the Bende-Arochukwu-Ohafia road section I, 20 kilometers, at the cost of N5.4 billion. It is re-awarded in the sense that the previous contractor was unable to satisfactorily execute the project in terms of capacity and equipment, therefore, we terminated and re-awarded to a new contractor.”
The Minister also announced that the Council approved N933.7 million for the procurement of an automatic meter reading machine, for the Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN.
“The other project that was approved relates to power, that is, the procurement of an automatic meter reading machine, at the request of TCN. That will include the installation of equipment and also the training of engineers, Auditors, Information Technology Staff who will operate and maintain the system. The total installation period is 18 months,” he said.
Commenting on the National Youth Service Corps NYSC certificate saga concerning the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed said “government is not silent on the matter, The NYSC has spoken and the NYSC is part of government thus, I don’t have anything to add on that.”
