Lagos-Ibadan Railway: FG reveals contractor’s challenge

There has been a breakdown of some machines belonging to the contractor handling the Lagos-Ibadan rail project, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.

Nigeria’s Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi said this on Monday during an inspection of the project.

According to Amaechi, the contractor said the breakdown was due to the pressures from the government for completion of the project earlier than scheduled.

“We discussed the machines and they (contractors) have no excuse. Their excuse was that the machines have broken down and are in the workshop,” Amaechi said.

“They said based on the pressure of speed, the machines are being affected and that if we reduce this pressure, the machines will take their time to work during the three-year term of the contract.

“But because we are pushing for it to be completed within one year plus, the machines are put on extra jobs and are breaking down, which is why they (machines) are at the workshop.”
