Contractor to compensate victims of collapsed bridge – says Kwankwaso

The Kano State Police Command says it has started investigation into the cause of the collapsed bridge that killed seven persons in Kano on Sunday.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso also said the state government would compel the contractor that handled the project to pay for the medical bills of the injured victims.

The contractor, the governor added, would pay compensation to families of those who died in the incident.

Individual have reacted to the collapsed bridge:

Yinka says “We should not put the cart before the horse. The first thing is to demand for a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. An independent safety organization should do that. If the contractor followed the government-approved scheme, then the state is liable. I only hope the contract was not approved without a liability insurance certificate. I have over 25-year experience in highway design and construction in the United States, so I know many factors are responsible for accidents. Only investigation will reveal what/who is responsible for the failure.”

While Emals Emals & Ecnerolf Academy are of the opinion that “We should hold the government responsible for the incident. How could it award a contract without monitoring it to ensure that it complies with safety measures? If the government did proper supervision, what happened would have been prevented? It is not about forcing the contractor to pay medical bills and compensations, but good governance.”

From proper investigation, to holding contractors responsible for the quality of construction and government negligence. We hope that we get to the root of this collapse and may the souls of the deceased rest in perfect peace
