Why Building Projects in Nigeria are handled by Foreigners

At the ongoing 2017 edition of the Building, Construction and Machinery Exhibition, light has been shed on reasons why building projects in Nigeria are handled by foreigners.

As we all know, in recent times, there have been countless cases of building collapse and deaths as a result of improper structure, maintenance or use of substandard materials for projects. This has made a lot of people lose trust in some Nigerian Construction Firms, and even before now, the Federal Government looks to have favoured foreigners in big building and construction projects across the country. What is responsible for this?

According to a PM news report compiled by Jennifer Okundia, building and construction in Nigeria is a subject we cannot overlook. Every other day, different projects including private, state and federal are commissioned while others are in progress in different parts of the country. Roads, houses, bridges are occupied and used by humans daily therefore neglect on behalf of the owners, construction workers, the govt including regulatory bodies obviously should not be condoled.

October 31st -Nov 2, was mapped out for this year’s edition of the Building, Construction and Machinery Exhibition event in Eko Hotel, VI, Lagos. various exhibitor companies ranging from doors, cables, pipes, Tiles, roofing amongst others were there to showcase their building materials.

The president of the Nigerian Institute Of Building, Builder Kenneth Nnabuife Nduka spoke to PM news about reasons why building projects in Nigeria are handled by foreigners. He stated that: Diversion of project funds for personal gains is one of the many reasons why substandard materials are used to build.

Nduka also mentioned that whether Govt, private or state projects, there is preference to using foreigners in building and construction rather than patronizing Nigerians due to the fact that some of these Nigerians do not even know the job well enough to deliver.
