Court sentences Labourer to 5 years in prison for stealing electric wire

An Upper Area Court 1 sitting in Kaswan Nama, Jos, on Friday sentenced a 25-year-old labourer, Etop Sunday to five years in prison for stealing electric wires and ceiling fan belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Judge, Lawal Suleiman, convicted Sunday after he pleaded to conspiracy, trespass, office breaking, mischief, and theft.

Suleiman gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N50,000.

He held that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such crimes.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Daniel Longwal, told the court that the case was reported on April 15, at the Anglo-Jos Police Station by Mr. Patrick Dung, Deputy Project Manager, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Longwal said the accused who is a resident of Abattoir Jos and his accomplice, who is at large, conspired and broke into the building housing the ministry and stole copper wires, ceiling fan, all valued at N3 million and the N16,000 cash.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 59,333,336,313 and 273 of Plateau State Penal Code law.
