In order to encourage best practices and attainment of international standards by firms, the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria has approved the use of pseudonyms for persons who desire to practice with names other than family names.
The Chairman, ESVARBON, Mr. A. G. Sangosanya, who made the pronouncement at the induction of 107 newly registered estate surveyors and valuers in Lagos on Wednesday, said the move was to make the profession in the country at par with practices in allied professions.
“The board has formulated and forwarded guidelines on the formation of mega firms with pseudonyms to the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development for gazetting. This stride is to encourage mega practice of the profession to meet international best practices as it is currently practiced in allied professions like law and accountancy,” he said.
Sangosanya said the induction of the 107 new members, which was the 32nd in the history of the board, was to substantially reduce the nefarious activities of quacks and check the spread of pseudo practices in the profession.
The new inductees bring the total registered estate surveyors and valuers in the country to 3,119. But Sangosanya said the number was still far from adequate when compared with the national population of over 160 million.
“The present management of the board continues to find ways and means of producing many more registered estate surveyors and valuers as quickly as possible without lowering standards. In this regards, the board has put requisite machinery in place, in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies, to check the spread of pseudo practices and bring to book culprits found guilty of the offence,” he said.
He also pledged the support of the board for steps being taken by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, to revitalise the housing sector and formulate a new National Housing and Urban Development Policy.
In his charge to the inductees, a former President, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Mr. Yinka Sonaike, stressed the importance of maintaining a good reputation and integrity.
