Family demands compensation on land donated to school

A family in Katsina-Ala, who donated a parcel of land used for the construction of the model school, has appealed to Benue State government to pay compensation for it.

The completed school was recently inaugurated for use.

In a letter of reminder written to the Chairman of Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the family of late Alhaji Musa Bawa of Hausa ward in Katsina-Ala stated that they would be grateful if the government adequately compensate for the land donated by their father to build the school.

The family’s patriarch, late Alhaji Musa Bawa, was said to have donated the land (an orchard with more than 100 orange trees) with the understanding that three of his children would be employed and a pledge of an honorarium after a former permanent member II of SUBEB, Alhaji Abioye Isa Yusuf, at that time appealed to him to release it for the school project.

The eldest son of the family, Kabiru Musa Bawa, who signed the letter on behalf his other siblings noted that his late father donated the land when one David Akiga Tsavende was the acting chairman of SUBEB.

“All the promises made then, of employment for his three children who have qualified with National Certificate in Education for the past 10 years and an honorarium have not seen the light of the day,” he said.

He, therefore, appealed to the state government to look into their complaints with a view of fulfilling the promises made to their father, who was a chieftain of the PDP until his death in July 2017.

Bawa said though the donation of the land preceded the Governor Samuel Ortom’s administration, there was the need for the government to give attention to their plight.
