FRSC records 125 road crashes in Adamawa, 65 deaths and 329 injuries

Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Adamawa state, Mohammed Husaini, yesterday in Yola raised an alarm about road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles in the state.

The Sector Commander said in 2017 alone, 125 crashes were recorded causing the death of “65 people and 329 others sustained injuries”.

He gave the figures while reacting to the Nigerian Pilot bureau on the menace of truck drivers on Nigerian high ways, saying “we have it on figures, in 2017 there were 125 road crashes; an average of 10 crashes in a month with 329 people injured and 65 deaths.

“In this respect, I think that this is a very high figure, even though we were able to rescue 865” within the period, he noted.

On the steps needed to curb unnecessary road accidents, the Sector Commander sued for what he referred to as the “enforcement of synergy between the three bodies to ensure there’s proper enforcement of laws;

“Frequent patrols are very necessary, mobile courts are also very necessary, and this we have been doing”, he added.

Meanwhile, some trailer drivers reacting to the issues raised have accused security operatives of extortion.

Ibrahim Isa, a trailer driver recounted his ordeal in the hands of security agents thus, “while we concede to some the issues raised against our members, we wish to state also here that sometimes accidents occur while trying to maneuver in order to escape security men who are in the habit of extorting us;

“For instance, last week I encountered security men on Malabu road (leading to Cameroon border), they ordered me to show my waybill, I did; but they seized it, I had to part with about seven thousand before I got it back”, he narrated.
