Heavy rain renders over 1,000 residents homeless in Delta community

Residents of Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State were yesterday caught unawares as what began as early morning showers suddenly became torrential rendering many homeless.

Over 1,000 residents were rendered homeless, following the downpour yesterday morning that lasted over one hour.

Areas affected include; Chief Eyaufe street, Lucky street by Omimi road, Okuemeva extension, Ibori road, Otumara road, Ogini road, Kingsley estate among others. Our correspondent who visited the area reports that residents were thrown into confusion as they were seen picking some of their valuables from their apartment that was flooded and looking for a safer abode.

Some of the residents who spoke to our correspondent include Mr. Abel Imonina and a former councillor, Hon. Solomon Obeh.

They called on relevant authorities to come to their aid, while accusing Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC of allegedly executing shoddy projects in the area.

Imonina told our correspondent that he has nowhere to sleep with his seven children, noting that he lost properties worth millions to the flood which rendered him homeless.

A taxi driver whose car was also submerged could not control his emotions, crying uncontrollably just as he told our correspondent that he borrowed money to buy the car to enable him feed his family.
