Kidnapped Turkish construction workers rescued in Nigeria

“The pair, who worked with construction firm VKS Nigeria Construction, were abducted from their hotel on 9 April in the town of Eket in Akwa Ibom state.

Five suspects have been arrested, said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Don Awunah, confirming the expatriates’ rescue, which took place on 19 April.

“The two kidnapped Turkish nationals were kidnapped and taken to the creeks of Calabar/Oron Waterways,” he said, according to Nigeria news outlet, The Nation.

“Undoubtedly, kidnap for ransom threatened Foreign Direct Investment in Akwa Ibom State,” he said.

No ransom was paid, according to a report by Reuters.

Don Awunah praised police skill.

“Following sustained police activities in the waterways, deployment of technical platform, cultivation of actionable intelligence and skillful professional negotiation, the two Turkish gentlemen were released on April 19, 2017,” he said.

“The Victims of crime have been reunited with their colleagues after medical assessment. Five suspects have been arrested and further investigation is ongoing.” ”
