Lafarge, OPIC Unveils New Makun City

The Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation and Lafarge Africa Plc have unveiled an affordable housing estate in Sagamu, known as New Makun City.

At the unveiling of the estate, the Chairman, Board of Directors, OPIC, Mr. Adekunle Adesina, said that in building the estate, the corporation keyed into the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration’s vision to provide affordable housing for residents of the state.

The Managing Director, WAPCO Operations, Lafarge Africa Plc, Mrs. Adepeju Adebajo, said the affordable housing initiative was the firm’s contribution to reducing the housing deficit in the country, starting with Ogun State.

The Head, Affordable Housing and Building, Lafarge Africa Plc, Ms. Jumoke Adegunle, stated that the project site belonged to OPIC, while Lafarge, in conjunction with Tye-Wall Contractors Limited, provided the carcasses of the houses using aluminium shuttering technology, which allows construction in just a few days.

She added, “We were invited by OPIC in December last year to construct 10 homes. The mandate was to do the homes in good quality, the right specification and to deliver in four weeks. What we delivered are concrete structures and the roof in partnership with Tye-Walls. Afterwards, OPIC will do the finishing of doors, windows and painting, among others.

“What we have on ground right now is Lafarge concrete and expertise in enabling companies like OPIC to deliver affordable housing to people. We have already completed the 10 units and are currently in talks to do more. We brought our expertise in cement, aggregate, design and building.”

Adegunle said it took between three and five days to construct each carcass of the three-bedroomed building of about 78 square metres each.

The Managing Director of Lafarge Africa’s Readymix and Aggregates, Mr. Loren Zanin, said the technology would help in reducing the country’s housing deficit.

“Speed helps bring down construction cost; we can build these carcasses cheaper than using the traditional method. You build faster and you can sell faster, which helps you make profit. You can do a lot more construction using this method; there must be speed of construction to reduce the housing deficit in the country,” he said.
