LG Chairman Blames Nkpolu Flooding on illegal property developers

Mr. Solomon Eke, Chairman, Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Rivers has blamed the flooding at Nkpolu-Rumuigbo on the activities of illegal property developers.

Eke told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that a special committee on flooding set up by the council had already submitted its recommendations on how to tackle the menace.

Reports show that some communities in Obio/Apkor, including Nkpolu-Rumuigbo experience flooding annually.

It would be recalled that the Nkpolu-Rumuigbo axis of the East-West Road was cut-off by flooding at the peak of the rainy season.

Meanwhile, the chairman has said that the council would henceforth clampdown on property developers who erect structures on waterways.

“Our study shows that the flooding at Nkpolu-Rumuigbo junction is as a result of structures that blocked the passage of rainwater into the creeks.

“We have also commenced the fight against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially on the drains, this is another cause of flooding,’’ he said.

Eke said that fund available to the council was minimal and could not extensively tackle the challenges of flooding in the area.

He called on relevant stakeholders to partner the council to avert similar occurrence in the future.
