How To Find Mentorship In Real Estate Investment

Mentorship is a very important subject in the school of success and it deserves every seriousness and care in approach and execution. In this piece, Debo Adejana analyses how real estate enthusiast can find mentorship in real estate investment.

Mentorship is a key factor to succeed in your business. Sir Isaac Newton, the renowned scientist was credited with the statement that says “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” How true? Very through I must say.

I have also heard of two other sayings like it; “birds of the same feather flock together” and “Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are”.

We all can do better with a mentor or two and the level of benefits we derive from our protégé-mentor relationship will help our endeavors.

I have one major guide in determining who my mentor will be and that is in fact that of a necessity, my mentor must be someone that has achieved far more than I have in my area of interest with hard facts and results to show for it.

As a success rule, I do not attach so much importance to the criticism or advice of someone who lacks hands on experience in the matter/area he/she is trying to advise or critique.

I have met a lot of people who have allowed themselves to be derailed by the advice of a concerned but inexperience person.

Someone who has never made a real estate investment or cannot give me mentorship in the section of the market that I am looking cannot cajole me to take a decision for or against what I want to do.

My people say “if someone will make a dress for you, to anticipate what he will do, you only need to look at what he is wearing”.

You cannot give what you do not have, “memo dat quod non habet” like the lawyers will say.

Get me right, I am not saying I will not listen or probably even have it at the back of my mind when examining and evaluating options and taking a decision, but it cannot be the sole reason I will be taking a decision.

I would rather go find experienced people to talk with and get advice from.

We conduct seminars, trainings, conferences and workshops on real estate a lot at Realty Point Limited and I always advise prospective first time home owners that if they must start on their journey to home-ownership, they have to take the bull by the horn and visit places people generally consider as outskirt.

They are to  find a homeowner (landlord) and ask about the perception of the place some years back when they were at the verge of purchasing it.

What we have found out from those experiences and that of the landlords we talk to from time to time in putting our publication together, is that everywhere was once a “bush” of some sort and the present outlook of a place should not be the (only) reason why an investor will turn a place down especially if it is only that range of property that you can afford.

Meanwhile, we have had people fall prey to cheap counsel of fellow property rent seekers not to invest in what they can afford but continue to wait and hope for what they cannot afford.

Many end up missing chances upon chances before they realize their folly, while a lot are still in the loop!

I consider the fact that whoever I am to take his/her opinion serious must have established proof of accomplishment in that regard, a fundamental mentorship principle.

If you need mentorship in real estate investment, who do you turn to for counsel and whose advice do you take serious? The ball is now in your court, you hold the ace, so decide!

To your success!
