NEWMAP rehabilitates 300 hectares of degraded land in Kano

The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) in Kano state on Tuesday revealed that it has already embarked on rehabilitation of 300 hectares of degraded land across 12 frontline local governments that were been identified by the project as the most prone to erosion and desert encroachment in the state.

Addressing newsmen after an inspection visit to the affected areas, Kano state commissioner of Environment Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, who is also the chairman state committee of NEWMAP stated that, more than 100 individual farmers have participated in the process where the project supported them with seedlings of fruits bearing trees, insecticides to establish orchards, woodlot and natural regeneration, based on condition that they will provide watering source and security to the plantation.

Similarly, the State Project Coordinator Alhaji Musa Shuaibu explained that the conventional planting for the 2018 rehabilitation exercise comprised of shelterbelt establishment and rehabilitation of some of the existing ones, water catchment plantation, institutional plantation, industrial plantation, fodder plantation, fuelwood plantation and roadside planting.

“So far we have inspected five forest plantations of 30 hectares each, aimed at producing fuelwood, constructional timber, fodder and fruits bearing trees of improved variety. inspected include five forest plantations of 30 hectares each, aimed at producing fuelwood, constructional timber, fodder and fruits bearing trees of improved variety,” he said.
