Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola has inaugurated a 2.8 kilometre road constructed by his administration in Osogbo to honour the workers in the state for their sacrifices during the economic recession.
The governor renamed the Odi-Olowo/Asubiaro road as ‘Workers Drive’ as a way of showing appreciation to the workers whose salaries were slashed because of the economic meltdown.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Osun State Chapter, Comrade Jabob Adekomi and the pioneer President of the NLC, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu were among the dignitaries that attended the inauguration.
Speaking on the occasion, Rauf Aregbesola said the project was part of the bigger Osogbo city road development project which stands out as a product of a visionary road map adding that the decision to use it to honour the workers was very significant.
“Those who are familiar with this road will remember its deplorable condition. There were dangerous points and holes big enough to swallow any vehicle unfortunate to run into it.
“Starting from Isale Osun junction, the road had become impassable with dangerous bends, twists and turns; and at some points, houses got precariously too close to the road, with the grim possibility of vehicles out of control running into those houses, putting lives in grave danger.
“The expansion of the road and the need to have a reasonable setback regrettably meant that some buildings are already standing in the way and have to be separated and taken out. This could have been avoided if there had been strict adherence to town planning rules in the past.
“We regret this and offer sincere sympathy to those affected, especially for those whom the houses were ancestral homes and had deep emotional attachment to them. They should see this as their own sacrifice in our efforts to beautify our city and develop a decent human environment”, the governor said.
