Stop collapse of major bridge, TUC warns Ekiti

The Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ekiti State, Sola Adigun, has called for the state government to mobilise experts to save the Ureje Bridge linking Ado Ekiti with the Afe Babalola University and Federal Polytechnic along Ado-Ikare Road from a complete collapse.

 Part of the bridge was washed away by the flood last week, and Adigun said the state government should fix it because of its importance to the social economic development of the state.

The TUC boss spoke with journalists in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday when the leaders of the council inspected some of the areas affected by flooding.

They were Onala, Emirin, Oke Ureje and Poly Road.

He appealed to the Federal Government to give financial aid to the state to solve problems relating to flooding.

He urged residents to desist from dumping refuse in water channels, saying it was time the government ensured that nobody built structures on waterways and other areas that could affect environmental sanity.

He said, “Government must now have a standard master plan for the state capital and major towns and decisively enforce the existing one if there is. We cannot continue to indulge ourselves in our attitude towards the environment nor continue to take the clement nature of our environment for granted, otherwise, we are all doomed by its consequences.”

The labour leader called on other agencies to complement the efforts of the state government to save the Ureje Bridge.
