Tenant Beats Landlord to Death Over ‘NEPA’ Bill

A man has been arrested for beating his aged landlord to death over high electricity bill.

According to the Ondo state Police Command, the man identified as Tope Akideji allegedly beat up 75-year-old Kayode Osunkalu of a building located at 17 Ayeferere street, Ondo town.

The deceased reportedly invited all tenants to discuss how they were going to settle the electricity bill which had been brought by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC.

As the meeting progress, an argument ensued between the suspect and the landlord over the bill settlement. Akideji allegedly became aggressive because the landlord gave an ultimatum of 24 hours to all tenants to contribute their share of the bill.

The suspect allegedly beat up the landlord because he insulted him and all efforts by other tenants to stop the fight failed. The aged landlord slumped after Akideji punched him severely. He was immediately rushed to the state Specialist Hospital in Ondo town where he was later confirmed dead.

Akideji was immediately arrested and his case transferred to the homicide department for further investigations.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue of the state Specialist Hospital for autopsy.

The Chief Police Superintendent Kunle Omisakin has confirmed the incident.
