Recently, we posted an article about the great wall of Lagos which is part of the structures to be erected in the proposed Eko Atlantic City that is set to re-define the landscape of the most populous and most expensive city in Nigeria. This article reveals the top 10 famous city walls in the world.

It would have been good to have an article on the top 10 famous city walls in Nigeria or even Africa, but as you well know,there are not too many walls in this part of our solar system. In fact we only have two city walls in Nigeria; the historic Great wall of Benin and the Great wall of Lagos, which is not even completed yet. And I’m not so sure if the continent of Africa can boast of at least 8 great city walls.

So, now you know why coming up with a list of top 10 famous city walls in the world was going to be a better alternative. That notwithstanding a city wall in Africa made the cut. You wanna find out which? Here are the top 10 famous city walls in the world with very rich history:

 

10. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, United States

In number 10 position is a wall in the united states in memory of slain soldiers during the Vietnam war.

A national memorial in Washington, D.C. It honors U.S. service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War, service members who died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and those service members who were unaccounted for (Missing In Action) during the War.

9. Sacsayhuaman, Peru

A walled complex on the northern outskirts of the city of Cusco, Peru, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Like many Inca constructions, the complex is made of large polished dry stone walls, with boulders carefully cut to fit together tightly without mortar. The site, at an altitude of 3,701 meters , was added as part of the city of Cusco to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.

This is the only wall in Africa that made this list of great and famous walls in the world. Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city in Zimbabwe. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country’s Late Iron Age. The city was surrounded by these walls.

7. Walls Of Babylon, Iraq

Ancient Babylon in Mesopotamia, situated about 85 km south of Baghdad was surrounded by these walls. Their origins reach back to 575 BC and the Ishtar Gate was considered as one of the world wonders of the ancient world due to its grandeur and architecture.

Built in the 15th century, these walls connected two cities and stretched over a length of 5.5 km. It was built as a defensive wall for the city of Dubrovnik and contained 40 towers and 5 fortresses. This is the second largest wall in Europe.

The longest wall in Europe, this wall was built by the Romans to protect their colony Britannia from the tribes in Scotland. It stretches for 117 km (73 miles) all across the land from shore to shore.

One of the oldest walls still standing today, this wall was built in the 13th century BC to protect the legendary city of Troy. This wall withstood the famous 10 year siege of Troy.

3. Berlin Wall, Germany.

This particular wall was basically a barrier. It was constructed by German Democratic Republic. The construction began on the 13th August in 1961. It cut off West Berlin from East Berlin. This particular wall was referred to as the ‘Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart’. The Western part of Berlin considered the wall to be the ‘Wall of Shame’. The wall was 155 kilometers long. The wall no longer exists; at least it does not serve the purpose of separation. Much of the wall was taken down, but it still is fascinating to look at. I myself had the pleasure of seeing it recently.

Located in Jerusalem, the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall is a famous Jewish religious site. The wall dates from the end of the Second Temple period, being constructed around 19 BC by Herod the Great. The wall was the western wall of the temple. In Judaism, the Western Wall is venerated as the sole remnant of the Holy Temple, making it the holiest place for Jewish people, the most visited site in Jerusalem, and one of the most visited attraction in Israel.

Built in the 14th century, the Great Wall Of China stretches for 8,850 kilometers!  This amazing wall was built to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from the attacks of nomadic tribes. The Great Wall is one of the most recognized structures in the world, it is the largest man made barier ever built, and it’s without a doubt one of the most amazing engineering achievement. However, the legend that claims that it’s the only man made structure visible from space with the naked eye, is false.
