Lagos – the city of excellence is laddened with numerous beautiful buildings which characterizes the landscape of the one-time capital of Nigeria especially the vast area that is surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. In fact, anytime I take a trip to Lagos Island and visualize the vast array of buildings there, I wonder if that part of Lagos state is specifically reserved for breathtaking buildings and skyscrapers.

There are buildings that have made headlines in Lagos for years and are still under radar. Buildings such as The National Arts Theatre and NECOM House(formerly NITEL)which is virtually the tallest building in the country have made their mark and are still reckoned with as far as the city of excellence is concerned. However, new buildings have sprang up and more are still springing up and its only a matter of time that some buildings may just be banking on lost glory.

1. Civic Centre

The civic centre located on Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Victoria Island Lagos is Nigeria’s masterpiece on the water front of Lagos Island. It is an event centre that has been built to the finest international standard. It consists of a grand banquet hall, meeting room and floating restaurant. It is a great venue to deliver high focused seminars or meetings and is ideal for mid-size or small audiences.

2. Four Points by Sheraton Lagos Hotel

Four Points by Sheraton Lagos Hotel is situated on the edge of the beautiful Victoria Island in Nigeria’s economic capital. The hotel is surrounded by a host of international companies, a shopping mall, movie theater, beaches and art galleries.

4. Christ Church Cathedral

The foundation stone for the first cathedral building was laid on 29 March 1867 and the cathedral was established in 1869. Construction of the current building to designs by architect Bagan Benjamin started on 1 November 1924. The foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) on 21 April 1925. It was completed in 1946.

It is popularly known as the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina and is the oldest Anglican cathedral in the Church of Nigeria. At various times in its history, the cathedral was the seat of the archbishop of the Province of West Africa, the seat of the archbishop and primate of All Nigeria and the seat of the archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos. It is currently the seat of the Bishop of Lagos.

 5. The National Arts Theatre

The National Arts Theatre is the primary centre for the performing arts in Nigeria. The monument is located in Iganmu, Lagos state. Construction was completed in 1976 in preparation for the Festival of Arts and Culture(FESTAC) in 1977.

The National Arts Theatre was built during the military regime of Chief Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo. Its exterior is shaped like a military hat. It has a 5,000-seater Main Hall with a collapsible stage, and two capacity cinema halls, all of which are equipped with facilities for simultaneous translation of 8 languages; among others.

The National Arts Theatre was designed and constructed by Bulgarian construction companies and resembles the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna, Bulgaria (completed in 1968), the National Arts Theatre Lagos being the bigger of the two.

Though this National monument looks old and rather neglected, the architectural design that is the hallmark of the building is second to none. From afar the National Theatre is a class act and a sight to behold. In fact the strategic location of the building makes it a breathtaking spectacle.
