ARCON Says NYSC Sabotages Training Of Nigerian Architects

Architects Registration Council of Nigeria ((ARCON) said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) policy of forcing most corps members to teach in secondary schools in their areas of primary assignments is a sabotage to the training of architects in the country.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja yesterday, ahead of the ‘2016 Architects Colloquium’ scheduled for April 25 to 28, the national president of ARCON, Arc Umaru Aliyu lamented that many architects who graduated from various institutions in the country have not met the council’s registration requirements because they were forced to take up teaching jobs during their compulsory one year service.

Aliyu stated that it is wrong for the NYSC to deny trained architects from posting to relevant agencies where they would have acquired relevant experiences that could assist them become qualified architects.

“Let me inform you that one of the requirements of the council for registration as architect after graduation is that you must have gone for two-year tutelage. In those two years, you will fill up a log-book that must reflect all that you have done in the field of architecture.

Once you meet the requirements, you will be given the certificate of competence that will make you eligible to sit for the professional certificate competence exams.
