Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria (AEAN)

Over the years, a lot of people have fallen victim of fraudsters who disguise as real estate agents and end up being swindled, with no hope of getting their money back or the property they paid for. This has given the public a poor perception of estate agents. In a bid to reverse this perception and curtail such fraudulent activities, the Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) established the Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria (AEAN) to ensure that industry standard is met and upheld and members are regularly tutored and trained in the method and technique in which they can practice the profession successfully such that all involved parties are satisfied.

Other objectives of AEAN include the development of estate agency into a respectable profession in Nigeria, maintaining a database of estate agents in the country, maintaining a Property Information System (PIS) that allows the establishment of market trends and ensures information is made available for property investors and researchers, provision and maintenance of a multiple listing system that gives members the opportunity to market their properties online, provision of resources and information that will enhance members’ productivity, creating a forum where members can network amongst members and liaising with the government and its agencies.

Because AEAN is a creation of the NIESV established to standardize and monitor activities of estate agents in the country, the NIESV is mandated to carry out certain obligations towards the association. These include guiding the activities of AEAN till executive officers are elected at its Annual General Meeting (AGM), outlining the mode of operation of the association, liaising with Lagos State Agency with the aim of determining a permanent role in the State for the association, designing a way through which estate agency practice can be put under control throughout the nation and presenting a report of the association’s activities to the management committee regularly.

The NIESV is also working out the modalities of membership but presently, becoming a member requires filling the membership application form on AEAN’s website and submitting. This is followed by a verification mail in your email box. Worthy of note is that even though membership is open to all professionals and any interested party, there are various categories of membership and to qualify for application, you must have at least a School Certificate Level of education.

Although the association is already in operation with its National Secretariat located at Plot A, Block 12, Elephant Cement way, CDB, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, the NIESV is still working towards presenting a bill to the National Assembly for government recognition and charter.
