Top 10 Most Beautiful Senate Building of Nigerian Universities

The aesthetic view of a university’s senate building is one of the silent but important factors used in ranking the best universities in Nigeria.

In 2015, I compiled a list of the top 10 most beautiful campuses in Nigeria. Though it was an eye-opener, it was definitely not an easy task considering the vast array of universities in the country.

In this piece, we view our universities from a different angle; this piece takes a look at one part of the whole lot.

This is a list of top 10 most beautiful senate buildings of Nigerian Universities.

In as much as functionality of any senate building is very paramount to the overall outlook of any institution, the aesthetic view is also an important factor in judging a school’s general idea of beauty.

There was once a very controversial piece I wrote sometimes in 2015 and later updated last year. That piece received a lot of backlash because of the sentimental disposition some of our readers here ascribe to the Universities they graduated from or presently school in.

A small group felt the writer displayed a lot of bias due to the fact that a certain region of the country was not represented in the list that was the core of the article.

So I decided to come up with something different just to ascertain if a different outcome will emanate from it.

This list was drawn out from a vox pop conducted by an NREH correspondent, Esther Adeniyi; the Universities that appear here are based on popular votes from a poll conducted on facebook.

The Universities on this list do not necessarily have the best structures or run the best campuses in Nigeria, however their senate buildings stand out from the over 150 senate buildings inherent in Nigerian Universities.

10. UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT, CHOABA, RIVERS STATE

Senate Building

This is the first federal university on our list. The University of Port Harcourt is a university in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt in Rivers state. It is in fact the only South-south University whose senate building is on this list.

University of Port Harcourt was established in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, and was given university status in 1977. If you don’t want to leave the south-south region of the country and yet want to attend a reputable university, then UNIPORT should be your destination.

The senate university is not so fantastic, yet it is the best in that region of the country.

9. OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE IFE

OAU or Oba Awon University as it’s popularly called is arguably the most beautiful University in Nigeria according to our list of top 10 most beautiful campuses in Nigeria. Albeit it has the 9th most beautiful university senate building in the country due to a limiting factor-age.

Though the architectural designs still stand, the beauty of the senate building of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife has been overshadowed by other new generation universities.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, the brain child of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo is situated in a place that is widely believed to be the origin of the Yoruba people; the dwelling place of Oduduwa.

8. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, AKOKA

The senate building of Unilag is one of the highest of the lot. It is a 13 story high rise structure that towers above other buildings in Unilag.

Asides it’s senate building, the university probably houses the most beautiful girls you can find in a Nigerian University. Some people call it ‘Federal University of swag’ others call it ‘University toh badt’, I call it the raw deal.

University of Lagos is the most sought after higher institution in Nigeria not because of the beauties inherent there or the somewhat breathtaking structures but because it is situated in the centre of excellence – LASGIDI–the city where dreams come true.

7. LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY, OGBOMOSHO

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) is a technology-oriented university that is located in the South-Western region of Nigeria. It was named after Samuel Ladoke Akintola (a native of Ogbomoso who was premier of the Western Region of Nigeria in his lifetime).

The senate building of the university takes the shape of a coliseum. It’s unique architectural design is one of the reasons it sits comfortably on the 7th spot on our list. It is the first state university on the list.

6. AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA

Ahmadu Bello University Senate Building is next to Ungwan Kubanni and is located in Kaduna, Nigeria. Ahmadu Bello University Senate Building has a length of 0.19 kilometres. The University has one of the finest collections of north’s bests.

ABU, is the pearl of the north and the best university in that part of the country. ABU – the oldest University in Northern Nigeria is named after the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first premier of Northern Nigeria.

5. ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY, AKUNGBA.

The 21st century university is a state university located in a mountainous area of Ondo state called Akungba, Akoko. The Senate Building of the new generation university is named after the immediate past governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko.

The University itself is named after an elder statesman and former governor of Ondo state, the late Pa Michael Adekunle Ajasin. The senate building of AAUA is probably the best in the south west geo-political zone of Nigeria. AAUA is the second state university on our list and the has the best senate building in a south-west state owned university

The five-story building was opened in 2014.

4. LANDMARK UNIVERSITY, OMU-ARAN

Landmark University (LMU) is located in Omu-Aran, Kwara State in Nigeria. It is a Private Christian University and was founded by Dr. David Oyedepo.

Landmark University was established by Living Faith Church Worldwide on March 21, 2011 as the second university owned by the church. The purpose of the establishment as stated by the chancellor is towards the realization of the Agrarian revolution.

According to the Chancellor, Dr. David Oyedepo, the name “Landmark” was gotten based on inspiration on how the school is to operate. This is also evident in the motto of the school, which is “Breaking new grounds”.

The senate building of the university is one of the best around. The University got the seventh spot in our list of top 10 most beautiful universities in Nigeria.

3. NORTH-WEST UNIVERSITY, KANO

 

At this point any of our top three most beautiful senate buildings in Nigerian universities could have seized the number one spot. North-West University, Kano is one of the new generation universities of the 21st century in Nigeria and is arguably the university with the most beautiful senate building in the north.

The senate building which is the best building among other fascinating buildings in the institution is breathtaking. If you don’t know better, you would think it is an ultra-modern mosque

Northwest University, Kano, was established in 2012 by the former Governor of Kano State, Engr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso. The University has the most beautiful senate building owned by a state in Nigeria and is the third state university on the list.

2. FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, ABEOKUTA

FUNAAB has it’s popularly referred to has arguably the most beautiful senate building in a Nigerian Federal University ever. It was number 8 on our list of top 10 most beautiful universities in Nigeria and is definitely the most beautiful University of Agriculture in the country

The University was established on 1 January 1988 by the Federal Government when four universities of technology, earlier merged in 1984, were de-merged. This led to the creation of the first two universities of agriculture in Abeokuta and Makurdi.

The senate building of the university among other structures in the institution is a class act!  It no doubt deserves our number 2 spot.

1. COVENANT UNIVERSITY, OTA

Covenant University is arguably the best private university with the most beautiful campus in Nigeria. It was given the number 2 spot in our list of top 1o most beautiful universities in Nigeria. This is the second university owned by Pastor David Oyedepo led Living Faith Church Worldwide to make this list.

Located in Ota, Ogun state, the towering senate building of the University slightly edges FUNAAB as the University with the most beautiful senate in Nigeria, the South-West and Ogun state.

The University was established in 2002 as a Private Christian University and a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. In January 2015, it was ranked as the best university in Nigeria according to Webometrics.

The ultra-modern senate building of Covenant University, Ota which is an eight-floor edifice was commissioned Sunday, March 17, 2013 by the chancellor Bishop David Oyedepo.

The senate building of covenant university is the most beautiful senate building in a Nigerian University for 2017.
