Contractors lament lack of funds for road projects

The Minister of State for Works, Power and Housing, Mustapha Shehuri, has said the Federal Government does not have the financial capability to fund all road projects.

Shehuri stated this while inspecting the Auchi-Okenne section of the Benin-Abuja Highway, where the contractor handling the road projects attributed the slow work on the road to insufficient fund.

The Project Manager of MotherCat (the contractor), Joubran Saadeh, told Shehuri that only 10 kilometres had been constructed since the contract was awarded six years ago.

Saadeh cited insufficient fund released to the company and issues bordering on payment of compensation and relocation of structures on right of way, amongst other challenges, as responsible for the slow pace of work.

He said only N3bn had been released to the company, which had completed about 10 kilometres of the 26.7km road awarded to it.

He asked for more funds from the Federal Government to enable the company to enhance the progress of work, saying the company was only mobilised with N3bn in 2017 out of a contract sum of N10.7bn.

The minister, who frowned on the slow pace of work, said, “You have to improve on your work and you are not putting in your best. You have been on this work for about six years and you have only done 10 kilometres of the 26 kilometres awarded to you.

“You people (contractor) must improve on your work and at our end, we will look for ways of funding,” Shehuri said.
