Court arraigns two for property fraud in Enugu

Two people, a man and a woman have been arraigned at the Federal High Court in Enugu State for property fraud up to the tune of N58 million.

Adaobi Ofoma Chuke and Chief James Ofoma are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining properties by false pretence.

The offences allegedly date back to 2010. The accused pair however pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them.

Consequently, the prosecuting counsel, Usman Shehu, asked the court for a trial date.

Chuke has been granted bail on self-recognition in the sum of N1 million. She was ordered to deposit her Law degree and Law School certificates, in addition to her international passport with the Court’s Registrar.

The second accused person was granted bail in the sum of N500 000 with one surety who must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 12 or a businessman.

The matter has been adjourned to May 26 for trial.

The rampant cases of property frauds in courts are alarming and it opens up the question “What can the government and real estate developers do to reduce the amount of fraudulent activities in the sector?”
