ESVARBON unveils three books on surveying profession

In a bid to promote ethical conduct, competency and global best practices in estate surveying and valuation, the Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria has unveiled three books.

The books, ‘Valuation Report Template’, ‘Competency Framework and Code of Professional Conduct’ and Explanatory Notes for Estate Surveyors and Valuers, according to ESVARBON, are expected to boost the growth of the profession.

The Chairman of the board, Mr. Williams Odudu, said the books would be presented to the public in Lagos today September 15.

“The board has also concluded plans to establish zonal offices as a way of having effective and efficient monitoring units that will be accountable to the board’s headquarters; zonal offices would be established in six geo-political zones of the country,” he said.

Odudu said that it had become necessary for members to have documented standard valuation framework of international standard, competency framework and code of conduct that would guide them in discharging their responsibilities.

He said there were two committees on the code of conduct, the investigating panel and the tribunal, where any errant member would be referred to if found culpable.

According to him, the contents of the books form part of the decree that set up ESVARBON.

Odudu also said that as part of measures to check quackery, the board through the Association of Estate Agents in Nigeria had commenced the registration of estate agents across the country, noting that more than 500 had been registered.

He said that this became necessary to protect people acquiring properties across the country from falling into the hands of dubious agents.

He said that apart from monitoring and regulating the practice, the body was expected to restore the image of the profession as the umbrella body for everyone involved in real estate agency.

He added, “This association was set up in a bid to bring sanity and some measure of control and monitoring, and introduce good practices and make sure that estate agency, as it were, is run the way it should be. It is open to membership from all cadres. This will enable them to go back to the society and practise with some measure of professionalism.

“The essence is to take control of the estate agency practice. For a long time, we have had everybody practising the profession; it has become an all-comers affair because there is a huge demand for property.”

Odudu said the association would introduce best practices and bring in as many people who wished to practise estate agency under its fold.
