Gen. Abubakar praises Kwankwaso for his decisiveness in initiating housing project

Former Head of State, Gen. Abdussalami Abubakar has argued that there are fewer sectors of the economy where the gap between needs, means and supply is wider than housing in the country.

This, he maintained, is against the background of the fact that the housing deficit in Nigeria has been put between 16 – 17 million units. This is even as the World Bank has estimated that the cost of bridging Nigeria’s housing deficit is N59. 5 trillion.

“Account, I am sure, is not taken in this estimate of quality of existing housing stock which can hardly be called adequate. That is why any addition to improvement in providing housing needs and bridging this gap is commendable”, the former Head of State maintained.

Gen. Abubakar made the assertion during the commissioning of Evergreen Residences, a multi-billion Naira fully integrated housing project undertaken by Kano state government and Urban Shelter Ltd., at Durumi District, Abuja, whose foundation he personally laid on the 26th March, 2012.

The former Head of State, who was represented during the commissioning by a former Federal Minister, Engr. Sani Ndanusa, praised Governor Kwankwaso for his decisiveness in initiating the housing project, acknowledging that the governor had exerted maximum effort to retrieve the land on which it is sited, which had for years been under dispute from the Federal Capital Territory, and wisely engaged the private sector in its swift development.

In his remarks, Kano state governor and Senator – elect for Kano Central Zone, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso explained that the land on which the 108 Durumi Housing Project has been executed is Kano state Pension Fund Trustee’s contribution to the partnership agreement with the project developers and that commensurate with its investment. Thus, the Pension Trustees is getting 20 Housing units.
