Godfrey Okoye University lauds Gov. Ifeanyi for construction of access road

The Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu has appreciated Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state for releasing funds for the construction of an access road to its permanent site.

The authorities and students of the university, led by its vice chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, yesterday paid a “thank you” visit to the governor to express the appreciation.

The governor had released the sum of N500 million agreed upon as the state government’s contribution for the construction of the Ugwuomu-Nkwubor-Godfrey Okoye University road.

The vice chancellor, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, also thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for the 500 KVA transformer the state administration donated to the university, saying: “We are very grateful that, in a very short period of time, you fulfilled your promises to us.”

Prof. Anieke, while briefing the governor on the progress of the road project, expressed gratitude to him for the opportunity to partner with the state government.

Governor Ugwuanyi, in his remark, thanked the university for the surprise visit and reiterated his administration’s commitment to the education sector in particular and the wellbeing of the people of the state in general.

The state government, in keeping with its policy of road construction in rural and urban communities, recently awarded a contract for the construction of the 10-kilometre Emene-Ugwuomu-Nkwubor-Godfrey Okoye University road in Enugu East local government area at the cost of N1.5 billion.

Gov. Ugwuanyi had inaugurated the construction of the road, which leads to the permanent site of the institution, a few weeks ago after “a special arrangement” was reached with the university authorities with the aim of attracting development to the area.

The university had made a request to partner the state government on the project, which is fundamental to its development, noting that all the institution needed from the state was N500 million while it sourced for the balance through partnership with other agencies and donors.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Anieke described Gov. Ugwuanyi as “a Messiah sent by God to wipe away the tears of the university and the people of the host communities”.

He expressed gratitude to the governor for coming to their rescue and regretted that all efforts by the university and the people of the communities to get previous governments to construct the road yielded no result “until the Messiah arrived”.

The visit also witnessed special choral renditions for the governor by the university choir and presentation of gift items.
