The Akwa Ibom State commissioner for Information and Communications, Aniekan Umanah, has described as “false and misleading”, a news report that the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, was building a multi-billion naira mansion four months after assuming office.
Mr. Udom is merely renovating the property that had been built 60 years ago, Mr. Umanah said. Addressing journalists in Uyo on Friday, Mr. Umanah said the report by news website, Saharareporters, of an alleged multi-billion-naira mansion currently being built by the governor in his hometown of Awa community in Onna Local Government Area of the State, was false. He said the story was “unfounded” and “the height of mischief”.

Mr. Umanah said the house in question was the building where the governor hosted his supporters and guests to a reception after his inauguration as governor. The commissioner said the house could not have become a new building four months after, saying that “nothing could be farther from the truth”. Mr. Umanah said the said building was a 60-year-old family house, which was currently undergoing rehabilitation. He said the governor was focused on delivering his campaign pledges.
