Kano engineers encourage girls to study engineering

The Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, Kano State branch, has commenced a sensitisation campaign to encourage girls in the state to study engineering courses.

The Chairperson of the association, Dr Zainab Yunusa, disclosed this on Thursday in Kano while briefing newsmen on the activities of the association.

She said the association was committed to encouraging female secondary school students to take up science subjects with a view to studying engineering in higher institutions.

Yunusa said that the association had organised a career guidance talk and public lectures for 120 female students selected from 20 secondary schools within the Kano metropolis.

“Gone are the days when engineering was left for only men. Today, engineering is not for men only again; hence our decision to organise the career guidance talk so as to encourage girls to study engineering courses,” she said.

According to her, the event is also aimed at changing people’s impression about engineering, saying women can also study it and become professional engineers.

Yunusa, a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Bayero University, Kano, said during the career guidance talk, a lecture would be presented on the ills of drug abuse among the youth.

“It is very disheartening to hear that some women and youths are now going into drugs. The lecture will, therefore, be used to sensitise the students on the dangers of drug abuse,” she said.

Yunusa said that the lecture would be attended by various stakeholders, including representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and medical doctors, among others.
