Labour London Mayoral candidate to ban ‘poor doors’ in London housing development

Sadiq Khan pledges to ban ‘poor doors’ in London housing development.

A Labour London mayoral candidate has pledged to ban so-called poor doors, where private and social housing tenants have separate entrances. Sadiq Khan said he had discussed with charities the need for a new approach to dealing with the capital’s chronic housing crisis. The use of separate doors to “segregate” tenants emerged in a new development in East London, sparking controversy.

Khan said: “Unlike the present mayor who has refused to end this appalling form of social segregation, I would act to ban poor doors once and for all.

“We outlawed segregation in this country almost 50 years ago and I’m not going to allow it to rear its ugly head again. Poor doors segregate people who are living side by side, they drive a wedge between our communities. I want a London that rejoices in its social cohesion not separates people on the basis of their social class.”

Khan said he would also tackle disputes over different pay rates on London buses, which sparked industrial action earlier this year. He promised to introduce a single wage structure to end the unfairness of companies paying different rates. “It doesn’t make sense there are 80 different rates of pay and one bus fare,” he said.
