MEXICO HOUSING – Although social policy has helped to contain poverty in Mexico, more efforts are needed to increase the quality of life for all Mexicans, President Enrique Peña Nieto said Monday.
The president spoke during the inauguration of 10 rehabilitation works for housing projects in Mexico City.
Dynamism in the Mexican economy is fundamental for reducing the level of poverty nationally. Reducing poverty fundamentally depends on the implementation of structural reforms, Peña Nieto said.
“What we are doing may not be to everyone’s liking, but working for all Mexicans is the government’s promise so that society has more opportunity for development and growth,” he said.
“The federal government doesn’t work for one particular political party or its members, but for all of Mexico and all its citizens,” Peña Nieto said.
Between 2012 and 2014, more than 1.1 million people moved into quality housing and 1.7 million people were enrolled in social security, according to the National Council for Social Development Evaluation.
Housing policy is another major achievement of the structural reforms the current administration has passed, the president said. Housing doesn’t implicate legislative changes, but a policy change for improving living conditions through public housing, provide more credits, subsidies and support systems to guarantee that Mexicans have dignified housing, Peña Nieto said.
The policy of the federal government has ensured that more Mexicans have dignified and quality housing today, with supports that were created in past years, he said.
The housing projects that the president helped to inaugurate represent the efforts of the government with remodeled, renovated and newly outfitted residencies. The projects were part of the “Improving Unity” initiative in Mexico City.
The federal government is committed to responding to the specific needs of various regions when it comes to housing, he said. Improving living conditions isn’t a small task, but a medium term project to increase the quality of life for the population that lives in the almost 7,000 public housing units spread around the country, the president said.
The initiative in Mexico City not only served to improve the living facilities themselves, but also increase the dignity, quality of life and beauty for almost 11,000 people who live in the 10 public housing units in Mexico City.
