It was learned that Nigeria has donated $300,000 (around 14 million) and housing construction materials for the government’s post-Haiyan rehabilitation effort.
Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippnes Buba Tekune turned over to Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman, the donations at the DSWD on August 19.
Charge d’Affaires Tekune the donations reflect the Nigerian government’s sincere desire to forge long-lasting bonds with the Philippines and the Filipino people. He said they are also an expression of the Nigerian government’s solidarity with and compassion for the victims of the November 2013 super typhoon Haiyan.
In behalf of the Philippine government, DSWD Secretary Soliman thanked the Nigerian government for its generous donations.
The simple ceremonial turnover was also attended by DSWD Assistant Secretary Vilma Cabrera; Murtala Jimoh, senior counsellor/head of chancery of the Nigerian embassy; Leilani S. Feliciano, director of Department of Foreign Affairs-Office of Middle East and African Affairs; and some members of the Philippine media.
