Oga Martins & His Kettle Of Fishes – Episode 2

Though it was raining and pouring down ceaselessly, Martins and Aisha were unaware as they continued their argument into the night. Aisha had stopped Martins from answering Runo’s calls yet again and the issue was really getting out of hand. Aisha had finally answered the call but that made matters even worse. Aisha had rained insults on Runo with no holds barred.

“Aisha you really had no right whatsoever to do that.”  Martins was furious.

“Oh really! I have no right to stop a slut from having an inordinate affair with my husband? Martins you are just a piece of thrash”

“That’s your problem, you just like to jump to conclusions. How can you call the poor girl names without a single proof of your dumb accusations.”

“What did you just say?” Martins should have known better. The words had come flying out of his buccal cavity before he realized he had made a grave mistake.

“How dare you Martins!” The giant in Aisha had been unleashed yet again.

Martins began to see different shades of Aisha that he never knew existed before they got married. He wondered how possible that was considering the fact that he had known her for almost ten years. However being friends with someone and dating that person are two totally different relationships that stood on unequal platforms. Martins left that part out. Was there even any form of courtship between them before they got married? Martins had no answer to that question? How many couples even go through courtship these days? Martins was still in doubt if that word still existed in the dictionary.

Martins was lost for words as Aisha yelled at him till her voice almost cracked. He reasoned how many more nights he would have to contend with this. A loud thunderous sound moved his feet toward the only window in the bedroom Martins shared with Aisha.

“Holy Christ! So it’s being raining. Men! Look at the clouds”

By the time Martins realized what it was that made the deafening sound, the rain had become a flood. But the storm inside his matrimonial home was too much for him to notice the storm outside.

At first it sounded like giggles from couples stealing kisses in the midnight sun, then came the moans from the wind as both struggled for attention in the night. It dropped down harder and harder as its companion struck against it in response, matching it strength for strength, both reaching extremities. The  Earth’s inhabitants caught in the rude awakening struggled to get away from the downpour that ensued.

The bass tones of thunder roared across the solar system making deafening sound that shook the foundation of 5, Otolorin Street, Lawanson, Lagos and broke the silence of the night. Runo dived under her thick colourful duvet with shallow resolve. Lightning struck on her window panes scaring the living daylights out of her fragile being.

“‘Yoooooooo!’, ‘Yoooooooo!’, ‘Yoooooooo!'” The wind moaned in its doleful tone.

It had been a long time coming. Finally the rains were here, she would be sleeping in one peace tonight. For Runo, it had really been difficult sleeping at night since the fuel scarcity took its full toll on the citizenry. What made the situation bad for the the tenants in Runo’s compound was that their faulty transformer was yet to be replaced since the equipment gave in to the enormous load on it. After two weeks of power outage and intense heat from the scorching sun that made its presence felt for long periods daily like it was in some sort of competition, the cool and windy effect of the ensuing rain had come as some form of respite. The rain was indeed a saving grace.

Runo found herself listening to the soothing sound of the rain that sounded better than “Majek Fashek’send down the rain song”. The rain thrummed on her metal roof creating a rhythm that made more sense than most naija songs of these days. Though her windows were closed, the cool breeze that emanated from the small spaces around the window panes cuddled Runo’s silky soft, even-toned and enviable skin while the wind caressed her hour glass slender body.

The rain’s intensity increased as it pitter pattered violently on the roof. This time it was turning out to be a storm. Runo shuddered, then the worst happened or so she thought. At first she felt she was beginning to hallucinate. The rainstorm had carved out a small portion of her roof. In fact her entire room was flooded before it even dawned on her that a fraction of her roofing sheet had been pulled out by the rainstorm. Runo wasn’t enjoying this anymore. Her fairy tale was turning out to be a tragedy. She was confused. Then the catastrophe became real; a violent east wind interloped into her apartment, ripping her entire roof off as it slammed down on her new Toyota matrix 2009 car parked just outside her self-contained apartment.

Runo screamed in shock. The impact of the fallen roof on her new car sent cold chills down her spine. It felt like the beginning of the end. She wished it was a dream.

“Oh my God! This can’t be happening to me”  Her skin turned to jelly as the tears flowed freely down her cheeks.

Though still in shock, Runo picked her phone from the hellhole her room had become to call the caretaker

“I will make sure Oga Martins pays for this, and whether that bitch likes it or yes I must speak to her husband tonight!”

To be continued next week…
