Oga Martins & His Kettle of Fishes – Episode 13

Martins finally made it to work despite his unstable health. There was a lot to catch up on and he couldn’t risk staying at home at the detriment of his duty as Manager, Property, Agency and Sales. A lot had gone down in his company since the tragic incident that alienated him from his work, especially in the aspect of sales. It was time to make amends and increase sales.

Martins drove cautiously into his company’s parking lot. The atmosphere at work was serene despite the hard times the company was experiencing at the moment. Asides the economy crunch that was hitting hard at everyone everything looked fine and dandy.

Martins’ entrance into his workplace was greeted with great excitement by all and sundry he came across. His co-workers were elated to see him after a long hiatus.

Martins was overwhelmed by the immense outpouring of love from his colleagues. Everyone wanted to talk to him at the same time. As for his subordinates in the marketing team, his comeback was like the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The look on their faces suggested that a messiah had come to steer their sinking ship to shore, hoping that the pressure on them to deliver would subside soon. Martins had a way of dealing with challenges when it comes to drop in sales no matter the circumstance, and now was the time when his expertise will be put to a grueling test. It was time for him to weather the storm that had been brewing since his temporary exit.  They were somewhat rest assured that it won’t be long before the MD would smile again.

“Oga Martins! Welcome back! We are glad to have you in our midst once again.” Mr Rufus rose from his seat to give Martins a warm embrace the moment he stepped into his office

“Thank you boss! I really missed work and my family here.”

“We missed you too sir,” Thelma the customer service representative who had come to drop some files with Mr Rufus spoke like a nightingale.

“Thelma why are you still bringing these files here or can’t you see your boss is back now.”

“Pardon me sir; I have gotten so accustomed to bringing it here”

“Oh those are for me?” Martins interjected.

“Yes oh! And those ones there too” Martins eyes trialed the direction Mr Rufus’s finger pointed towards. He was stunned at the pile of files that he had to attend to. It was like they left his work attended to while he was away. This was double tragedy! Martins thought.

“And you what did you say your problem is?” Mr. Rufus switched his attention back to Thelma.

“I said it will take a bit of time for me to start getting used to taking the files to Oga Martins after his long stay from work”

“You are kidding me right? See Thelma if its play just stop it. I have enough work on my hands already. If you don’t know the way to his office again you can just follow him on his way out. I’m sure he is headed to his office from here.”

“No I still want to see the MD before I settle down to work” Martins added.

Thelma’s phone beeped loudly as she glanced at her phone screen. “Thelma you want to drop that in my office before I go see the MD”

Thelma wore a look of fear and apprehension on her face as she stared wildly at her phone screen totally engrossed in the text message she was reading “Oga Martins, there is a problem” She announced.

“With the files or your phone” Martins asked.

“They said they’ve been calling your line but you are not picking” Thelma finally looked away from her phone to settle her gaze on Martins.

“Who are they?”

“Your wife’s colleague”

“Jees! That’s true I left my phones in the car. Is my wife okay?” Now it was the turn of Martins words to be laced with fear and apprehension. Thelma stood rooted to the spot like someone who just saw a ghost. Martins snatched the phone from her as he read through the message on her phone.

“Oh my God! MFO please I have to leave now. My wife has just been admitted to St Benedict’s”

“What happened?”

Martins ran out of the office like a rabbit being chased by a pack of wolves leaving Thelma to respond to Mr.Rufus’s inquest.
