Over 40 houses submerged in Edo by flood

Flood in Edo – Over 40 houses have been submerged and hundreds of people displaced by flood in Udaba, Anegbette, Oghomere communities in Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Some of the victims told NAN on Tuesday that they were relocating as a result of the continuous rise in the water level of River Niger.

Hundreds of inhabitants of the communities affected by the flood had started relocating to nearby communities of Fugar and Auchi in Etsako Central and Etsako West respectively, NAN said.

The people have also resorted to premature harvest of their crops on farms affected by the flood.

The immediate past Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Edo, Donald Osikhena, who was a victim, said there had been no response from the state government since the problem started on Friday.

He said the Flood Victims Resettlement Camp constructed by the Federal Government was yet to attain 40 per cent completion and had been abandoned by the contractor handling it.

The Village Head of Udaba, Chief David Inetakpe, said non-completion of the resettlement camp had led to relocation of some families to other villages, while others had moved to the upland.

“Most painful is that we have not heard from the government since this problem started on Friday.

“We need help and there is no point pretending about it. We need government to come to our aid,’’ Inetakpe said.

Also, the Village Head of South Uneme Oliola, Chief Yakubu Ugbodaga, said the flood had impacted negatively on the lives of the people.

He said the water level kept increasing by the day and appealed to the government to assist the victims.
