An architect, Mr. Lewis Ali has identified policy inconsistency in the housing industry as the major problem of development in the sector in Nigeria.
He said that successive administrations have come up with one policy or the other for the development of the housing sector, but that such administration that formulates the policy never accomplishes it.
Ali who disclosed this to The Tide in Port Harcourt shortly after a public event in Port Harcourt, noted that policy inconsistency is unhealthy for the growth of any country’s housing sector.
According to him, the housing sector has been known for contributing to the economic renaissance of many countries as it forms one of the basic needs of life.
“Unfortunately, in Nigeria, we have been experiencing governments that have never accomplished what they had set out to achieve for the people in the housing sector.”

“The Federal Government and local authorities should design, adopt and implement pro-poor city development strategies and ensure sufficient availability of land for housing development.
“Promoting security of tenure is a prerequisite for sustainable improvement in housing and environmental conditions,” he said.
Ali, however, advised government to adopt strategies that developed nations had used to optimally provide accommodation for their citizens.
He also urged the Federal Government to pull resources together to overcome the challenges confronting its housing sector.
