Reasons behind FCTA establishment of Mass Housing Department – CHUKWU

The FCT Administration has created the Mass Housing Department to address the housing needs in the Federal Capital Territory and reduce the springing up of slums.

The FCT Permanent Secretary, Engr. John Obinna Chukwu FNSE, made this disclosure at the opening ceremony of the Abuja Housing Show on Monday at the International Conference Centre.

The Permanent Secretary reiterated that the ever influx of people from all walks of lives into the Federal Capital Territory have necessitated the Administration to take this proactive step of establishing the Department.

Engr. Chukwu said though, the increasing deficit of decent and affordable housing in Nigeria’s urban and rural areas poses major challenges to economic growth, healthy living and development of the entire country, the Administration would continue to strengthen the Department to achieve the set goals.
He lamented that the resultant effect of the influx of the people to Abuja is the growing over crowdedness in homes, neighborhoods and communities, which is causing the rapid growth of slums.
The Permanent Secretary observed that this development increases pressure on infrastructural facilities, resulting in rapidly deteriorating living environment, health and social order.

According to him, the FCT Administration in addition, has complimented the establishment of the Department with opening up and expanding of district infrastructure in the Federal Capital City using the Private Sector.
He stressed that the FCT Administration will work assiduously to provide serviced land to investors in the housing sector in order to make housing delivery easy and accessible.
Engr. Chukwu assured that the FCT Administration would continue to encourage stakeholders to take additional steps by liaising with relevant MDAs and the organized private sector in the provision of affordable housing for the FCT residents and Nigerians as a whole.
The Vice President, Professor Yomi Osibanjo was represented at the occasion by Senator Osita Ozinazo.
