#ShelterMatters: Why do Landlords have issues with spinsters and bachelors?

There are issues going on around that you probably haven’t heard about just because you haven’t or didn’t have to pass that path in life. Our journey might be rough but not necessarily on same path. Now I am beginning to sound inspirational but that’s not the point.

Today, I am considering why landlords have issues with spinsters and bachelors.

As a young man or woman, you probably get to rent a mini apartment while living the single life. Most people do not have a problem with a bachelor living alone in whatever kind of apartment he can afford but when it happens to be a spinster, eyes roll, mouths talk and people generally insinuate things in this part of the world.

However, what has to be done has to be done. Our main focus today is the ‘not so friendly’ reception Landlords give to prospective tenants when they realize he or she is a bachelor or spinster.

Why do Landlords have issues with spinsters and bachelors?

A young lady who would simply like to be addressed as “ADA” shared her story with us. Read below:

Hi, my name is Ada, I have experienced this discrimination twice because I have had to search for a house close to my school distant learning area twice. To me, I think the first problem is the landlord wanting to control the lives of everyone residing in the apartment. My first experience was really painful, when I saw a very decent house which fit my budget and the landlord told me he couldn’t rent the place out to me because I am a lady and he doesn’t buy the idea of single ladies staying alone.

I asked him why and he said they usually turned out being prostitutes and having different friends, male and female. To avoid being rude, I let that slide and fortunately I got another one. After about 2/3years, my place became small for me and I had to look for another apartment. Something not too big but comfortable and bigger that the previous one. I met same issue.

The agents had to tell me before hand to lie about my status and tell them my fiancé stay with me. Being the bit stubborn head that I am, I told them I wasn’t going to do such. It was very stressful but at the end of it I saw a good one where the house owner wasn’t interested in my status. All she wanted to know was that I have a good job, showed her my ID card and all went well.
They are probably scared of youths doing things excessively out of the youthful exuberance, but they should understand that they can’t punish other people for one person’s behavior or on an assumption. If there is anything the government can do about the unfair discrimination, then, it should be done fast.
